Young Chul Lee / Artistic Director of the 1st Anyang Public Art Project 2005

Dear Michael Kvium & Christian Lemmerz,

It is my great pleasure to invite The Wake for temporary show of Anyang Public Art Project 2005.

I am an artistic director for Anyang Public Art Project 2005. I am also the exhibition director of Total Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul. I had directed the 2nd Gwangju Biennale in 1997, working with Dr. Harald Szeemann and Busan Biennale in 2000, working with Rosa Martinez and Hou Hanru. I was a co-curator of Albisola Biennale of Ceramics in Contemporary Art, Italy in 2003.

I had introduced 40 single video works from World Wide Video Festival in Amsterdam for Busan Biennale, 2000. At that time, Mr. Tom Van Vliet, a curator of special section for Busan Biennale, gave me the catalogue of The Wake. It's been five years and I believe now it is time to introduce The Wake, which translates one of the master pieces of 20th literature into complex images, to the Korean public and international visitors.

Anyang Public Art Project has started with the redevelopment plan of Anyang resort by the city of Anyang. The city of Anyang, its name is originated from Buddhist term, Paradise. It is the place one can reach after he gets awareness. Anyang Resort is located in Anyang city inside the valley of Samsung Mountain. In fact, Samsung Mountain is very significant place for the history of Korean Buddhism, because three famous monks had resided for meditation. Therefore, it is regarded as the holy mountain.

However, this holy place has transformed into slum area by undergoing Japanese colonization, Korean War and modernization. The logic of 'Turbo-engine-event capitalist' has threatened the multi-layered and multifarious aspects of the place by enforcing the new arrangement and orders. It eradicates heterotopians' ecological order, whether they are human life or natural life in universe.

Against this backdrop, ANYANG PUBLIC ART PROJECT has started with questions about the meaning of life in terms of ecological, philosophical, and sociological perspectives. I strongly believe The Wake will bring out new insights about the existence of life to the Korean who has been through so many nightmares throughout the history.

The Wake will be displayed as a 4-screen video installation inside of lookout tower by the Dutch architect group, MVRDV on the top of Samsung Mountain. The inspiration of MVRDV's lookout tower comes from the idea of extending the contour line of the mountain, which can be understood as the expression of long cherished desire to get closer to the paradise. This kind of mixture of architecture and art work will be very epochal and will leave deep impression to the viewer. The temporarily show for Anyang Public Art Project will go last for 40 days. I'd like to play The Wake once a week.

Anyang Public Art Project focuses on the utopian spirit of Buddhism in the middle of heterotopia. It will challenge the traditional boundary of art, architecture and design. The video works, including The Wake, will serve to remove friction among architectural art works or artistic architectures. They will function as the electricity for circulation among different parties.

Please do not hesitate any questions regarding this project. Once again, I thank you in advance for your consideration.

Sincerely yours,
Young Chul Lee
